ANNE MCCAFFREY IS INDUCTED TO THE SCIENCE FICTION HALL OF FAME AT THE SCIENCE FICTION MUSEUM IN SEATTLE, WA. I was honored to be asked to present the award to Anne, who looked gorgeous. She attended with her daughter Gigi, son Todd, agent Diana Tyler and Diana's charming husband Bill, and her lawyer Jay Katz among others. Our mutual friends Tania Opland and Mike Freeman (recording artists and performers, composers of music for THE MASTERHARPER album) and Lea Day as well as Anne's three nieces, Gwenn, Valerie and the other Anne McCaffrey (you'll sometimes see her name in movie or TV credits as she works in the film industry) and members of their families also came to see Anne honored. Unfortunately I have only one picture of Anne at the ceremony that came out well but here it is. Anne looked lovely in her beaded purple gown. Here she is congratulated by her longtime friend and agent, Diana Tyler. The gent in the background is another longtime friend, Jay Katz. This was taken of Anne either this year or last summer at the Science Fiction Museum. INTERVIEWING ANNE MCCAFFREY FOR THE SCIENCE FICTION MUSEUM
On August 28th I had the honor of interviewing Anne McCaffrey for a special presentation she did to benefit the Science Fiction Museum in Seattle, WA, located in Seattle Center in the funny looking building that also houses the Experimental Music Project. If you love science fiction and are in the Seattle area this is something you really need to see. Far from being dry and static, the museum is full of the artifacts of favorite books, movies, TV shows, a wall of the weapons of science fiction from kiddie ray guns to high tech laser rifles, an interactive traffic jam of space ships where you can bring up the ship of your choice from your favorite movies or TV shows, a conversation between lifesize robots , and a marvelous holographic globe. Your "greeter" is Gort, the robot from the Michael Rennie classic The Day the Earth Stood Still. My own novel, The Healer's War, was featured this month in a special revolving display. Here are a couple of the pictures taken by Matt Hargreave of our interview. This was the signing after the interview. Anne signed a lot of her solo books and I signed many of mine as well but we both signed a great many copies of First Warning, the first in our Acorna's Children series. Note the Egyptian collar Anne is wearing. You will find that in the beading section of this website, as well as the collar I am wearing. which I designed to go with the beautiful evening jacket I'm wearing. Here's me looking on while Annie tells some of her great stories to the audience. My interview technique was to ask a few leading questions that prompted Anne to talk about why she became a writer, why she chose to write science fiction, how she came to invent Pern and its wonderful dragons, and also the origins of some of her other great stories. After her appearance at the Science Fiction convention, Anne and our friend Lea Day flew to Atlanta for Dragoncon. I could have gone to Cascadia Con, the North American Science Fiction Convention this year but I was too tired! Prior to the interview, I drove Annie and Lea down to Portland, up to Port Townsend, and over to Seattle while Anne pillaged the quilt stores in search of booty to take home to quilt-fabric challenged Ireland. Lea found more books she couldn't live without and introduced me to a wonderful new-to-me beadstore in Portland called The Bead Source.
