Gallery 4 Swarovski Cultural Fusion Design Contest Entry: Art Deco Faux Egyptian Revival Lotus and Bud Collar
This necklace is a finalist in the Swarovski Cultural Fusion Design Contest. I chose to do a variation on my brick stitch lotus design I've used for earrings and turn it into a right angle weave design, then embellish it with Swarovski sew-on teardrop crystals and ropes of crystals to resemble the Egyptian lotus and bud design. The colors do not show up very well in the photo but they are very rich and vintage looking in real life. Originally I designed this with seven elements but found that made the piece too large and floppy, so I narrowed it down to 5. I also had to redesign the color scheme several times because it was unclear for a long time just which crustals were still available from Swarovski

In this closeup of the detail of the collar you can see that I used the sew on crystals as if they were cabochons. Instead of sewing them on Lacey's Stiff Stuff, however, I used a piece of E'tal backing that was briefly available from a couple of vendors. It came in metallic colors and was much thinner than Lacey's, which worked better for the purposes of this necklace. |
