GALLERY 5 Sculpey Skull Day of the Dead Banner

Okay, I admit that Sabrina Koebel's exquisite lampwork Days of the Dead skull banners gave me the idea to make one from Sculpey for my friend Charley. The thing is, she loves to dress up for Halloween but this year neither she nor her husband, who usually sews her elaborate costumes, had time to choose a subject and make a costume. So she found some fabric at the fabric store in Fairbanks with a black background, white skulls and red glitter eyes. From this she had created for her a traditional Eskimo kuspuk, a kind of hooded, flounced long sleeved mini-dress Eskimos wear over their fur parkas to protect them from dirt and such in the winter, and sometimes wear alone as a top when not outdoors. Usually these are made from some really wild fabric, like Hawaiian prints. So a skull pattern was cool. I decided to help Charley accessorize her outfit with appropriate jewels and broke out all my polymer clay tools to fashion this skull banner and put with it the same red and black beads I used to string my Frieda choker, plus one of the little plastic bone toggles. I hope she'll like it!
